Kottke redesign

Jason's finally gone mostly table-less though his code is still quite <div>-happy (i.e. lacks semantics).

I also have some concerns that his layout won't look quite right on Unix boxen, but he's finally taken the plunge.

Bravo!

Tantek leaves MS

Tantek has left Microsoft. Clearly after the break-up of the Mac IE dev group and the failure of the MSN TV stuff to catch on, there wasn't much hope.

The world has a net gain now that this talent is away from MS and persuing a passion again.

Congratulations! I'm sure the role of MS diplomat was getting old too :-).

Gmail Tips

Found this bit of GMail tips and tricks. It's funny how amazingly surprised I was when my account was 'down' for maybe 20 minutes yesterday. I believe, aside from ISP-related DNS issues, that's the first instance Google un-availalbility I've ever had.

Fallout from W3C 'webapps' conference

It seems that the rest of the W3C does not believe that natural extensions to HTML + CSS + Javascript + DOM + XML Events + Forms is sufficient for 'next gen' webapps.

I can't see why.

OperaSoft and the Mozilla Foundation disagree. They are forming their own loose standards organization to address this architectural path.

This reminds me of the flair-ups over RSS standards (only in a much, much broader context). I submit a good starting point for this group is too look at the principles of GMPG.

Let's face it HTML "textareas" suck

Perhaps the best example of a self-referential essay on a piece of technology I've ever seen.

Stop the insanity!

I'd never thought that I would invoke Susan Powter's catch-phrase, but Jesus, a patent on double-clicking?!!

Actually, it's worse than that. It's a 'shield-based' patent covering a "time-based hardware button for application launch". I think my 5 year old Motorola mobile phone interface has this feature.
Hell, the Texas Instruments Speak 'n Spell I played with at 4 years old had that!
