Sooo true. We used the XMLHttp object for a bunch of query interfaces in a recent project, and it so changes everything.

Interested folks will also want may want to check out the latest version of the WHAT spec and/or the X-Toys library. Warning, if you've never read over a W3Cish spec. before than you'll probably just want to glance at the introduction.
